If you’re an entrepreneur, or you’re venturing into the startup world, you’ll soon realize something. It is challenging and costly to recruit qualitative talent. Although startups and companies, in general, fail because of a wide variety of factors, one of the main reasons is the inability to recruit quality talent. When you need qualitative expertise, but lack the resources to recruit full-time, the solution might be to look for freelancers.

The freelance labor market lets you cherry-pick top talent and pay comparatively low sums to buy their services. But be warned that the freelancing industry isn’t without its obstacles. We’re giving you some advice in this article to negotiate those choppy waters and find a freelance solution that works for you.

How to Hire

How you hire plays a big part in who you hire and the job result. Many items that could go wrong include; recruiting unqualified people, mismatching time zone, language differences and a host of others. Below are a few points to follow in order to prevent certain pitfalls.

Requirements

Firstly, write down the specifications for the project. Unlike a full-time employee who will be around as you work out the path forward, a highly defined project strategy is expected by freelancers to achieve results. Determine the deadlines, results, objectives and any other information you can cram into your project schedule. Thumb rule: The more informative it is, the better it is.

Budget

Set a budget next. This is the most tricky aspect. When you go with a blank check to hire, you’ll get offers from something as low as a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. Speak to a couple of friends and bounce off their planning suggestions to better gage the planning. You may also take a look at what other customers pay for similar ventures. Consider setting a minimum and limit so that space for negotiation is given.

Recruit

Place your net big. Look for as many freelancers of quality as you can, and invite them to come for an interview. What you’re looking for is simplicity here. If they are unavailable the best talent is worthless to you. When you lock up some top-skilled freelancers who have shown interest in your idea, it’s time to test.

Review

Peruse previous ventures of theirs. How did former customers have to say? Why did they get ratings? How many related projects did they carry out? Never take a word of a freelancer about their skills. Check them all to assess their level of competency. If you find one that fits, the freelancer is interviewed and started.

Where to Hire

Now that you have a good idea of what to do when you hire a freelancer, where are you going to find them? Here are a few places to visit.

Major Marketplaces

Today, you can find freelancers in major marketplaces like Upwork, Freelancer, Fiverr and Guru. The biggest benefit of going with those marketplaces is the talent depth and breadth available. At the other hand, the principal challenge is to sift the wheat out of the chaff. To surface you’ll need to work harder to recruit the best talent for your project.

Specialized Marketplaces

Others are smaller niche platforms such as 99designs, Toptal, QuiGig-recruit now, Matchist and more. Many sites provide a better product because they invest heavily in hiring top talent for their services, as well as value-added features of the website. This makes attracting top talent quick. One significant drawback is that they also cost more.

Portfolio Sites

Which include sites such as Behance, Dribbble, Stack Overflow, GitHub and others. You have an opportunity to see what the freelancer has done right up front on these pages. The biggest problem with these sites is that they don’t have project management resources and the credibility of a portfolio is also difficult to determine.

Social Platforms

Twitter, LinkedIn and Reddit also have a fertile recruiting ground. Many of these sites have freelancing groups, or forums, where you can go and post a work and get proposals. Although this is an simple choice, you are going to face the task of reviewing ideas and finding out how to move forward once you recruit them.

It takes time to recruit the right freelancers, and diligent feedback and vetting. But, once found, a talented and professional freelancer will bring exceptional value over time to your project.
