Fortnite: Season 5 | Black Screen and Crashes While Playing

Fortnite Season 5 brought some changes, but also what seemed to be a variety of issues.  Although the game works well for a large number of people, when the game loads up, there is a small number who can encounter “black screen” crashes.  There are a variety of causes of this issue-from (unlikely) defective graphics driver to having issues inside Fortnite itself.  In the most part, the problem of black screen crashes appears to be exacerbated by the way the latest update has damaged or corrupted various files-stopping the operating system from being able to load the files it needs to run the game.
